Bang.. twang.. bang.
Several days since launch the engine room bore a likeness closer to a salvage yard than a room containing access to the heart of a space vessel. Cracked seals, rusty fittings and broken hoses were scattered throughout. Many of the broken parts were not available and Jade was forced to either bypass systems or rig solutions that weren't entirely safe.
Luckily, for this voyage, there wasn't a need to change directions. The lunar colony was a straight shot from Jade's point of origin. His only concern was to get the engines running long before entering Lunar space. If he was escorted into the Lunar colony by the authorities one more time he would risk losing his ship.
... Twang .. bang
Swinging widely Jade's thrust into the heart of the engine missed its intended target. The recoil of his swing sent the wrench sailing back towards his forehead. Too late, a warm trickle of blood slipped down into his eyes.
Reaching up he swiped at his brow with his finger tips. Coating them with blood he looked at them intently as he rubbed his finger and thumb together until it dried. He was part he was attempting to install was being re purposed and was slightly too small for the fitting he was placing it into. His hope was to use force to bend it into place.
With a shrug of frustration Jade started to walk towards the exit of the engine room. The tickle of blood had begun ran down onto his nose. He reached up with is forearm this time smearing the ichor onto the sleeve of his shirt. whoops. Shrugging Jade decided no damage had been done. His shirt already covered with engine grease disguised the bloody mess. Continuing to wipe his forehead using his shirt Jade headed to the ships bridge.
Strewn with wires the bridge contained similar renovations that the engine room was currently undergoing. There room contained several stations to choose from; communications center, navigation terminal, mining operations console and command chair. The command chair made available a summary of the operations conducted by the other three. A point in fact was that Jade rarely sat at any of the other three stations. General, less accurate, controls to the other stations were available from the command chair. Jade didn't believe in exact measurements.
Flopping his large frame into a chair across from the navigational terminal the prominent odor of neglect waifed from the cusions. Jade rubbed his fingers together in an effort to to warm himself. It was cold. The chill in he air was not life threatening. As, a safety mechanism, all unnecessary systems go offline while the ships engines are not running. Apparently climate ontrol was a luxury the programmers of the safety mechanism deemed unnecessary.
Glancing down Jade squinted at the monitor. First thinking he eyes had lost heir ability to focus he then realised that the monitor was caked with sediment.
Taking a deep breath Jade exhaled and produced steam. Moisture collected on glass and he began using his sleeve to clean it. The sleeve still damp with blood produced a muddy mixture containing ichor and dust. Jade's face twisted into an expression of annoyance. He scrubbed feverishly until the the monitor was evenly covered with goo and produced only a slightly blurry image.
Analyzing the data from the terminal took several moments longer than it should have. From his best figures Jade would enter Lunar orbit without altering course. If his figures and luck were on his side he may be able to fool the authorities that he was under control of his vessel.
The seat was comfortable. Jade's head began to nod. His eyelids blinked. Pictures of rusty fittings and broken hoses filled his vision. His head jerked and he realised he was only partially conscious. The stress of getting the engine running prevented him from obtaining any decent sleep.
His conscious mind was concerned with entering Lunar space with running engines. The stress of losing his ship was very real and Jade did not want to lose his ship. The authorities had approached him several times and each occurrence had averted only by chance.
Unconsciously he didn't care at all about the authorities. Eyelids tugged. Dreams pulled. The request for sleep won over and he slipped unconscious. |
